What terpenes actually are
Terpenes are aromatic oils produced by many plants — not just cannabis. They're why pine smells like pine, lemons smell like lemons and lavender smells like lavender. The same molecules appear across the plant world; cannabis just happens to produce a rich, varied mix of them.
Beyond aroma, terpenes are thought to interact with cannabinoids to influence the overall effect of a given flower — the basis of the "entourage effect." That makes a flower's terpene profile a useful clue to how it might feel, alongside its cannabinoid content.

A flower is rarely defined by one terpene; it's the blend that gives each its character. Caryophyllene is a curiosity because, unusually for a terpene, it's thought to interact directly with the body's cannabinoid (CB2) receptors.
The entourage effect — useful idea, not settled law
The entourage effect is the hypothesis that cannabis compounds — THC, CBD, the minor cannabinoids and the terpenes — work better together than in isolation, shaping each other's effects. It's a plausible, widely cited idea, and it's why full-spectrum products that retain the natural mix are popular.
But honesty matters: the entourage effect is not fully proven. The human evidence is still developing, and much of what's said about specific terpenes "doing" specific things comes from preclinical work, aroma association, or marketing rather than robust clinical trials. Treat terpene claims as interesting and plausible, not established fact.
Why terpenes beat "indica vs sativa"
The old indica/sativa labels are increasingly seen as poor predictors of effect. They originally described the plant's physical shape and growth, not how it makes you feel — and modern cultivated varieties are so cross-bred that the labels say little about the actual chemistry.
A more useful approach is to look at the chemovar (chemical variety): the cannabinoid content and the terpene profile together. Two "indicas" can feel very different if their terpene profiles differ, while a "sativa" and an "indica" with similar profiles might feel alike. This is why some prescribers and patients pay attention to terpene data on a product, not just the indica/sativa tag.
What this means in practice
- Smell is a clue, not proof. Aroma reflects the terpene blend, which may correlate with effect — but it's not a guarantee.
- Track what works for you. If you're a patient, noting the terpene profile of products that suit you (alongside cannabinoids and dose) builds a personal map more reliable than any label.
- Be sceptical of bold claims. "This terpene cures X" is overreach. The science isn't there.
