Storing Cannabis Safely: Freshness, Childproofing and Discretion

If you hold a prescription for medical cannabis, how you store it matters for two reasons: keeping the medicine effective, and — far more importantly — keeping it away from children and pets. Accidental ingestion is the single biggest household safety issue with cannabis. Here's a practical guide.

Child and pet safety comes first

This is the part that genuinely matters. Cannabis products — especially oils and anything that looks like food — can be mistaken for a treat by a child or eaten by a curious pet. Because cannabis affects small bodies far more strongly, accidental ingestion can be frightening and dangerous, and it does happen.

Treat cannabis exactly like any other medicine you'd never leave lying around:

  • Store it up high and out of sight, ideally in a locked or childproof container or cupboard.
  • Keep it in its original child-resistant packaging — that packaging exists for this reason.
  • Never decant it into food containers or anything that disguises what it is.
  • Don't use or store it in front of children in a way that normalises it as food or sweets.
  • Keep it away from pets, who can be seriously affected.

If a child or pet ingests cannabis, contact the National Poisons Centre on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766) or seek urgent medical/vet help. Don't wait to see what happens.

Keeping it fresh and effective

Quality medicine degrades if stored badly. The enemies of cannabis are light, heat, air and moisture (and the opposite extreme — too dry — for flower).

For flower:

  • Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place — not in direct sun, not next to a heat source.
  • Avoid extremes of humidity. Too damp invites mould; too dry makes it harsh and degraded. Many people use humidity-control packs to hold a stable level.
  • Don't keep it in the freezer loose — freezing can make delicate trichomes brittle and degrade quality (and condensation on thawing risks mould).

For oils and capsules:

  • Follow the label. Some are best kept cool, away from light; check your product's instructions.
  • Keep the cap tight and store upright.
  • Mind the expiry/shelf life — verified products are tested for stability over a defined period, so use within it.

Good storage protects the accurate dosing that the legal, verified product gives you — there's no point paying for a tested, consistent medicine and then letting it degrade.

Sensible discretion

Beyond safety and freshness, a bit of discretion is just practical:

  • Keep it tidy and contained, not scattered around shared spaces.
  • Be mindful of flatmates, visitors and tradespeople — out of sight is out of mind.
  • Smell management. Airtight containers also help with odour, which matters in shared or rented housing (and may relate to tenancy smoking clauses — see our renting guide).
  • Carry only what you need when out, in original packaging with your documentation.

A quick storage checklist

  • Childproof and pet-proof: high, locked or child-resistant, original packaging.
  • Cool, dark, airtight for freshness; stable humidity for flower.
  • Follow the label for oils and capsules; mind expiry.
  • Never disguise it as food or decant into unmarked containers.
  • Know the number: National Poisons Centre 0800 764 766 for accidental ingestion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep flower fresh? Airtight container, cool and dark, stable humidity. Avoid heat, light, damp and the freezer.

Where should I store cannabis with kids in the house? Up high, out of sight, in a locked or child-resistant container, in its original packaging. Treat it like any other medicine.

What if my child or pet eats some? Call the National Poisons Centre on 0800 764 766 (or a vet) and seek urgent help. Don't wait.

Does storage affect potency? Yes — light, heat, air and moisture degrade cannabinoids. Poor storage weakens and spoils the product.
